Pitfalls of the Wrong Timing

King David was a man after God's own heart, yet he is a classic example of a leader of God's people who missed the spiritual timing of the hour.

In 2 Samuel 11, there is recorded a tragic incident in David's life. In past years, when I preached on that chapter, I used it as a text for a message on sexual misconduct. However, on an airplane flying home from Europe, the Lord prompted me to reread this story. Then he asked me a question.

He said, "Why did David commit the sins that he did in this instance?"

I began to talk to the Lord about it, and I answered Him with my usual thought on David's situation with Bathsheba.

He said, "Read it again."

And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and beseiged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.

2 Samuel 11:1

The Lord asked me, "What time was it?"

I said, "Well, it was the end of the year."

The Lord said, "That is not the time I am talking about. That is natural time. The next sentence tells you the time David should have been in. What time was it otherwise?"

I said, "That verse says it was at the time when kings go forth to battle."

That was it! David missed the timing that God ordained for him to follow. The sins that he is so remembered for are only the surface of a core problem —he missed the timing.

Where was David at a time when the kings went forth into battle? Where was the king when his men were out fighting for the country and taking territory that the Lord had promised? God gave land to them, but they had to occupy it. Instead of leading the fight for the Lord, David sent his men to fight, while he stayed home.

When people do not move with God's timing for them, they are vulnerable to the traps and temptations of the enemy. David ended up in this story as an adulterer and a murderer, because he did not go with the right time.

Missing God's timing is almost as dangerous as deliberately being disobedient. What it means is that God walks on, and you are not under the shelter of His wings to one degree or another. I believe the degree is associated with how much we are aware of His timings. He will never leave us, but we quite often walk away from Him. He is still our Father, yet we are not in the close fellowship necessary to be in tune with Him. When we are not in tune, or sensitive to the Holy Spirit, we do not hear Him as clearly when He warns us of things to come.

Hosea 4:6 speaks of God's people being destroyed through lack of knowledge. David's lack of insight that to miss God's timing might destroy him almost did exactly that.
